You’ve heard it said, “When it rains, it pours.”
Here in Charleston, when it rains, it floods—literally! I’ve never had to worry about my Honda getting flooded, but I’ve already had two flood-warning texts sent to my phone during downpours!
Last November I made the decision to move to Charleston without a job or place to live. By December I was packing box after box, nauseated with how many decorative pillows I had and how many books I’ve accumulated! And after a sweet Christmas and New Years spent with family in VA, on January 7, 2013, I made the move to Charleston, South Carolina! It might have been the scariest moment of my life, but it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I was fortunate to house sit for a friend during my first two weeks in Charleston. My sole focus was to find a place to live and to start building relationships for Shabby Shea Creations. After four days of driving all around Charleston, I was sticker-shocked at how expensive housing and living was here. I went to my “temporary home” that night, talked to my mom, cried, and started to look up part-time jobs on the internet!
I came across a part-time volunteer coordinator position with a new Hospice branch here in Charleston. I was truly interested, considering my background with interning at Hospice and past volunteer experiences. So I applied, partly out of desperation to compensate for Charleston’s expenses and partly out of a sincere intrigue for the job.
The next day, I found my cute little house, great landlord, and started Shabby Shea Creations full on. Clients came, I started to build new friendships, and the transition to Charleston was smooth and effortless. I was really on Cloud 9 with my new life adventure!
So the Hospice job….I didn’t hear back for months and truthfully, I kinda forgot about it. March came and out of nowhere, I received a phone call from the director asking if I was interested in an interview. I said yes, because I was, and a few days later met with the two women starting up the branch.
We had an INSTANT connection over the vision of this hospice branch and how to care for patients and their families. They asked me if I was interested in both the part-time volunteer coordinator position and the part-time bereavement coordinator position to combine it to make a full-time job. I told them about my own business with SSC and said I’d have to think about it.
Realizing most of my clients with SSC needed me when they were off work on the evenings or on the weekends, I started to really entertain the idea of a full-time job with Hospice. What had me most intrigued was how perfect the job descriptions were with my heart for hospice. As the Volunteer Coordinator, I’d have the task to recruit and train volunteers, as well as play matchmaker with them to our patients. As the bereavement Coordinator, my role would be to provide care for our patients’ families after their loved one has passed for 14 months. I’d get to be the one that walks through their grief and help them connect to resources in the community to help them cope. The more I envisioned myself in these positions, the more convinced I was that these jobs were made for me!
So…I said yes to a generous full-time offer, benefits and all! For the past two months, I’ve been training and working for the newest Hospice branch in Charleston, Regency Hospice! On some nights, I work my magic in Shabby Shea Creations and have been slowing building new potential clients to work for on evenings and weekends. I couldn’t be more blessed to have this full-time job and my own business to grow. In terms of blessings, when it rains, it pours.
Another fun tidbit: I turn 26 on Cinco de Mayo (WAHOO!) and my health insurance would run out because of my age. It “just so happens” that I was hired at the perfect time because my Hospice health benefits started on May 1st! What a God-ordained gift! Because when it rains, it floods.
