“Chocolate and Waffles in Belgium!”

Day #20: July 18, 2009

For our last morning in Amsterdam, we originally planned to go to the Heineken brewery, but the nasty weather changed our minds. We took a midday train to Brussels and were welcomed with very chilly, but sunny weather. We found our adorable hotel (Hotel de la Madeleine), which was very central to the Grand Place, chocolate shops, and other main attractions. So after we got to our hotel, we took our much desired showers and dressed up for the night, meaning we wore our dresses for the first time all trip, meaning our only clean outfit left!

DSC05393We enjoyed dinner and followed our nose to the fresh waffle corner shop. Piling on stracciatella ice cream, fresh strawberries, and hot melted chocolate over a freshly made waffle made this girl drool as I ate each bite. We devoured our waffles as we listened to a wonderful band playing on the street. Three violinists and one cello player drew crowds until the last note was strung. By far, they were the best street band I’ve heard on this Walkabout. What a wonderful welcome to Belgium.

So far, I think in Belgium one can simply gain 5 pounds by only smelling the chocolate. (Uh oh, and I haven’t even been here but 3 hours!) But oh how much I love walking down the streets smelling chocolate, fresh pastries, and home made waffles! (What a different smell than walking down the streets of Amsterdam…!)

Now excuse me, I must go clean my face of all the chocolate I’ve guzzled!
